Sternhall Times: September
From our pharmacy team
As the summer winds to an end, so does the chance to get some much needed sun on your skin. Sunlight helps our bodies to produce Vitamin D, which is essential for healthy bones, teeth and muscles. Most people are able to make Vitamin D they need from sunlight between March– September, but this is not the case during darker months. You can make sure you are getting enough Vitamin D through your diet. Vitamin D rich foods include:
- Oily fish such as salmon, sardines, herring and mackerel
- Red meat
- Liver (avoid if pregnant)
- Egg yolks
- Fortified foods such as cereals (be sure to check the label)
During Autumn and Winter, the advice is to get vitamins from your diet where possible. It may be worth taking vitamin D supplements. You can readily ger these in general shops and community pharmacies. The dose you need depends age, medical conditions and medication. Please speak to your community pharmacies for further advice about this and to choose the right supplement for you.
