Keeping your skin safe in the sun

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the UK. Ultraviolet radiation from the sundamages the skin and this can lead to skin cancer. Experiencing severe sunburns and long duration of exposure from the sun increases your risk of skin cancer:

  • Cover your skin as much as possible, consider lightweight clothing for a cooling effect
  • Wear a hat that will cover your face, ears and neck
  • Wear sunglasses approved to filte5th August– cycle to work– the UK’s biggest cycle commuting event, all you have to do is take
    part.
    25th&26th August– Notting hill Carnival. This is the annual community led event, bringing
    people from all over the country together. For more information about the event, please

  • Repeatedly apply sunscreen throughout the day
  • Don’t forget to protect your lips– using a SPF 30+ lip balm
  • Don’t forget some medicines can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Common ones beingdoxycycline, amiodarone, methotrexate, hydrochlorthiazide, tretinoins. This is not an exhaustive list, please refer to the information leaflet found in your medication box.

Awareness days

5th August: cycle to work the UK’s biggest cycle commuting event, all you have to do is take part.

Health and well being road show

Southwark council have arranged a health and wellbeing road at various locations in Southwark in August. There will be health professionals you can speak to about your wellbeing, you can get a mini health check done, get advice about quitting smoking and much more. Find out the dates available and locations

 

NHS health checks

NHS health checks is a free service offered to check your overall health. It can tell you if your are at a higher rick for certain health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease and stroke. The check is for patients aged 40-74.

You can book your check with our health care assistant or the practice nurse.
